Designing Robust Crating Solutions for Modular Data Centers Shipped to Japan
A global manufacturer of Modular Data Centers approached us with a critical logistics challenge: safely transporting a large quantity of oversized, high-value units from their manufacturing facility in Ireland to Japan.
The shipment route involved sea freight with multiple port stops, requiring repeated unloading and reloading. This exposed the cargo to extensive handling, vibration, and environmental risks. The client needed a crating solution that was not only structurally robust but also precisely engineered to protect highly sensitive equipment throughout the entire journey.

Our Approach
The project began with a detailed technical review. The client supplied SolidWorks drawings of the Modular Data Center units, allowing our engineering team to fully understand the size, weight, lifting points, and vulnerable components of the product.
Using this data, our engineers designed a bespoke heavy-duty crate tailored to:
- Withstand repeated port handling and long-duration sea transport
- Protect the units from mechanical shock, vibration, and movement
- Meet the client’s dimensional, handling, and compliance requirements
Throughout the design phase, we worked closely with the client to ensure the proposed solution aligned with both operational needs and budget expectations.
Prototyping and Testing
Once the specification and pricing were approved, we manufactured a sample crate. To ensure complete confidence in the solution, we deployed an on-site engineering team to physically test the crate using one of the actual Modular Data Center units.
This hands-on testing phase allowed:
- Verification of fit and protection
- Assessment of loading, securing, and handling procedures
- Fine-tuning of the crate design where necessary
Any required adjustments were identified and implemented immediately, ensuring the final design was fully optimised before mass production.
Production and On-Site Crating
After final approval of the sample crate, we proceeded with the manufacture of the full production quantity.
Impressed by the professionalism, technical expertise, and efficiency of our on-site team, the client extended our scope of work and entrusted us with complete on-site crating operations
for all units. This ensured consistent quality, correct packing procedures, and full adherence to the approved design across every shipment.
Results
- All crates successfully endured the demanding sea transport route and multiple port handling stages
- The Modular Data Center units arrived in Japan perfectly intact and undamaged
- The client achieved a smooth, reliable logistics process for a highly complex product
- Our on-site support and engineering-led approach strengthened the client relationship and delivered measurable peace of mind
Conclusion
This project demonstrates our ability to deliver engineered crating solutions for large, complex, and high-value equipment, even under challenging international transport conditions. By combining detailed design analysis, real-world testing, and hands-on on-site support, we ensured the safe delivery of critical infrastructure equipment across the globe.
